Councils have taken a good lead on recycling over the last twenty years and enabled people to do their bit but their attitude to car use has been very different. In Chelmsford instead of making less car use possible through better public transport, encouraging flexible working practices and other measures, they have just made car use in the City more and more difficult without proper alternatives in place. They have closed one of the staff car parks at Broomfield Hospital but most shifts start before the buses run. They have put in more and more parking restrictions and stopped town pay and display machines from taking cash, even before COVID. Most people are not driving for fun but because work, childcare and social needs requires them to get from A to B. Increasingly, people in Chelmsford are finding that they can’t park at A and they can’t park at B. We support Green initiatives but these policies are not solving problems they are wishing them away and creating more. We desperately need Labour Councillors in our city to deliver joined up thinking on these issues.
