Conservative-controlled Essex County Council has decided to cancel funding for upgrading the crossing outside Perryfields Junior School on Lawn Lane. There have been concerns for many years over the absence of a school crossing patrol officer for the crossing adjacent to the school.

Chelmsford Labour Party calls on the Council to reconsider the decision and put children’s safety first. Concerned Springfield resident Carol (pictured) said: “The current situation is dangerous for pupils of the school and their families. It is disappointing that Essex County Council has not prioritised children’s safety in making this decision.”

A petition from the Perryfields Junior School community said: “We strongly believe that immediate action is required to ensure the safety of everyone using this route and would urge the installation of a pelican or puffin crossing, replacing the current zebra crossing. Although there is a zebra crossing in place, with signs and flashing lights warning of children crossing, as well as zigzags outside both schools, this does little to reduce the speed of some drivers or their careless parking.
